Safire's Lowest Blow

In William Safire's October 18, 2004 New York Times column, he bemoans the fact that during the debates the Kerry-Edwards campaign twice brought up the fact that Vice President Cheney has a daughter who is a lesbian. In fact he thinks that pointing out this bit of hypocrisy in the Republican position is so bad that he calls it the "lowest blow" as if nothing could be worse.

In response, here is the email I sent to Safire and to the NYT's letters to the editor:

The "lowest blow" is the Bush administration's support of a constitutional amendment that prevents gay people from marrying just in order to satisfy its right wing religious supporters. The Kerry campaign has not gone far enough in exposing this. During the debates someone should have asked George Bush, if one of his daughters was gay would he still support the marriage amendment and what would he say to her?
As they say, "all politics is personal".
